About Our School

Springwell School is a special school for children with severe, moderate or profound multiple learning difficulties. The School also contains a unit for children with autism. It is a co-educational provision with a 3 – 11 year old intake of children. Our children are predominantly from the Hartlepool area although children do attend the school who live in other Educational Authorities. At the present time we have 67 children in the school including guest pupils.

We offer educational accommodation which is second to none. In June 2004 we opened a new state of the art sensory room. We have our own soft play, large ball pool and hydrotherapy Jacuzzi pool. We have a newly refurbished computer suite and also P.C.’s and interactive white boards in the classrooms. Each classroom is spacious and offers a stimulating context for learning.

PHILOSOPHY
Our philosophy at Springwell is simple – it is to provide our children with the best. The best being the richest and most rewarding educational experience possible. We all work towards providing our children with the greatest opportunity to grow intellectually and morally in an environment which is safe and nurturing. Each child is valued greatly as an individual and his or her achievements are given the merits they richly deserve.

WHAT ARE WE AIMING FOR ?
i) To develop a broad, balanced and accessible curriculum in line with Statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, that is capable of responding to all of the needs of the children at Springwell School
ii) To actively promote a school environment that is safe, caring and nurturing to the children which creates an educational environment that stimulates and maximises the potential for learning
iii) To promote an environment which encourages personal growth and citizenship which recognises and celebrates the experiences and achievements of the children
iv) To ensure that children are given the opportunity to learn skills, gain knowledge and develop attitudes that will facilitate them living independent lives or reduce their dependency on others
v) To work with parents in a real partnership which facilitates the educational and social development of the children and provides a support network amongst parents
vi) To establish the role of governors within the management team and fully recognise and develop their pivotal role in the school organisation

CURRICULUM

The school offers a full and varied curriculum which covers such areas as the development of language and communication skills; reading, writing and number skills; social and self help skills and creative activities

For the children who have yet to reach the level of reading, writing and mathematics there is a comprehensive curriculum consisting of building blocks in communication, cognition, perception and motor skills. To complement this there is also a sensory curriculum which stimulates the senses fully and enhances the ability to make choices based on likes and dislikes

There is regular and valuable input from the physiotherapists, speech therapist and peripatetic teachers for the hearing and visually impaired.

Each child follows an individual programme in line with the National Curriculum Programme of Study – if this is deemed appropriate, planned by the teacher after assessment of the child’s level of development in each area of the curriculum. Individual educational plans are written for each child and these are then taught systematically. Progress is reviewed as the child develops and the individual educational plan is reassessed and updated on a regular basis.

The aim is for each child to be involved in a wide range of stimulating experiences and situations and to achieve his or her maximum potential in the areas of intellectual, physical, social and emotional development.
