Welcome to Dragon Class

Dragon Class consists of 12 of the best children in the world. They have a variety of educational needs and follow the Bronze Pathway of our curriculum.

Spring 2025 - Extreme Earth

W/B: 17.3.25 - PE

 

We have continued playing playground games on different terrains. This week we had a walk to Hartfields and played a variety of games on the slight inclines in the freshly cut grass around there - be careful not to fall when running down the bank Dragons!

Music

 

This week we looked at the sounds we can hear in the environment around us. We then looked around the outdoor area and our classroom to see what we could find to make our own noises. We enjoyed making our own music!! 

W/B 10.3.25 - English (Non-Fiction) Ernest Shakleton

 

Over the last couple of weeks we have been looking at the life of the explorer Ernest Shakleton and life at the Antarctic. We are now experts on writing fact files.  

Science - British Science Week

 

This week we have been focusing on Science. We loved the special Science related activities that Aimee had prepared for us in the hall - we looked at everything from how to make a volcano to what food is healthy for our bodies. Back in class we completed a range of activities looking at the life cycle of a caterpillar. 

RE

 

We have continued to look at New Year celebrations and rituals from across the globe and religious spectrum. This week we looked at the Hindu New Year celebration of Holi. We learnt about good triumphing over evil and the story of Holika and Prahlad, we coloured our own patterns and then we celebrated colour by covering each other in paint! 

W/B 03.03.25 - World Book Day

 

Of course on Thursday it was World Book Day and we are a class of bookworms. Dragon Class made such a great job of decorating their wooden spoons as book characters and they remembered to bring their favourite book in from home. We shared our book choices with each other and Caroline even showed us her current book choice from home. 

W/B 10.02.25 - Art

 

This week we have been taking part in an Art Award project with Extol Creates. We have worked with an artist called Amanda Smith and have looked to capture iconic scenes of Hartlepool. We have used a variety of mediums to bring the landmarks alive, we also captured our images to use in the work. 

W/B 3.2.25 - Maths

 

This week in Maths we have been looking at mass. We have understood the idea of heavy and light and we are able to make comparisons. We are able to use the scales to make comparisons. We then looked at weighing how heavy classroom objects are using the scales and interlocking cubes as a measurement. Some of the children used the scales to work with Numicon and to try and make the scales balance. 

Number Day

 

On Friday we celebrated Number Day. We were set the challenge of finding numbers within our classroom but we weren't allowed to use the Maths Wall! We then went on a number hunt around school and ended up at the collection box. We worked hard to match the coins we were given to the different slots on the box, we had to look carefully to see the value of our coins. We ended the morning with a couple of games of bingo in class. House!!!

Dragon Class enjoyed a variety of playground games one afternoon this week as part of their PE, they took on a variety of roles within the games, sometimes being the leader and instigator and sometimes not. 

W/B 20.1.25 Language and Literacy 

 

Over the last couple of weeks we have enjoyed the story The Storm Whale. We have worked hard to remember the story, discuss the story and produce some independent writing in relation to the book. 

W/B: 13/01/25 PE/PHSRE

 

This term we are looking at outdoor activities/games on different terrains for our PE sessions. We started with the terrain of concrete on our yard - we played What's The Time Mr Wolf and Grab the Bacon. The children worked with each other to understand the aims and purpose of each game. They had a great time.

Music

 

This term we are lucky to have Sarah from Tees Valley Music Service working with us. She has been helping us to sing a variety of songs and playing games where keeping the beat and the rhythm are important. 

W/B: 6th January 2025 - RE

 

We are starting to look at celebrations and we looked at celebrating New Year this week. We talked about how we celebrate New Year at home and the different things that we do. We discussed how it is a time for reflection and thinking about what we might like to achieve this coming year. We had a mini party and sang Auld Lang Syne.

Maths - 2D Shapes

 

This week we have been concentrating on squares and rectangles and the properties they have and how they differ. On Thursday we went on a hunt around our playground to find examples of squares and rectangles in the environment. 

Autumn 2024 - Entertain Me

Christmas Bake Off. W/B 9/12/24 Some of the children from Dragon Class made their own cakes and biscuits for the bake off and sent us some lovely photos of them enjoying baking with their families.

Christmas Activities - W/B 2.12.24

 

We started to celebrate Christmas in Dragon Class this week. We enjoyed a Christmas themed activity time in the hall - we walked through icy water, played in the snow storm, made a special bauble, a snow shaker, designed a Christmas jumper and played a couple of games. 

We also had the honour of being chosen as the class to decorate our Christmas tree at St Hilda's Church on the Headland. Each class had made a decoration based around the theme of peace and we took the decorations to the church and placed them on the tree. We don't want to appear biased but we think our tree was the best decorated. 

What a lovely assembly today, Dragon class enjoyed sharing what they have been learning about in History and Geography about Seaside holidays and places they enjoy visiting.

W/B: 18/11/24 Music. The children listened to a pirate story and explored the beat of the music using clapping and instruments. What lovely music we made!!!

W/B 11.11.24 - Understanding the World, People Culture and Communities. 

 

We have started to look at the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur - we have learnt that this is a special time of the year for Jewish people; a chance to reflect, ask for forgiveness and start a fresh for the new year. We showed that we can say sorry by making the Makaton sign. 

 

23.10.23 Science- Making an umbrella for Teddy. The children have been exploring different materials to make an umbrella for Teddy. The children investigated which materials were waterproof and which were not.

W/B 14.10.24 - Language and Literacy

 

Over the last couple of weeks we have thoroughly enjoyed the Julia Donaldson classic Zog. We have explored the story, we can name the characters, remember the order of the big events and some of us can write in relation to the text. We really enjoyed pretending to be the characters and role-playing the story. 

Geography- Places We Enjoy.

 

Today we visited Ward Jackson Park as part of our Geography work on places we enjoy. The children enjoyed a lovely woodland walk, exploring the sculptures, seeing the ducks, swans and geese and of course the playground. 

W/B 07.10.24 - Art (Print)

 

The children have been looking at the work of Orla Kierly who uses repeated patterns and colours in her designs. The children used Duplo to create their own print patterns using different colours.

Computing

 

The children have been learning about pixels in ICT. The children decoded simple images by colouring pixels. 

Science- Materials.

 

The children have been investigating different materials and their different uses. Today we explored washing clothes and discussed what would be best to use to wash the clothes and how we could dry them. The children loved washing the dolls clothes and hanging them up to dry. 

Geography - Places We Enjoy

 

This week we visited the beach as part of our Geography topic work. The children loved playing on the sand and building sandcastles. We loved having an ice cream!!!! 

W/B 30.9.24 - Understanding the World (Geography)

 

Dragon Class enjoyed a visit to Bishop Cuthbert Park today as part of our Geography topic- Places We Enjoy. The children all enjoyed the different play equipment in the park.

W/B 23.9.24 - Maths 

 

Over the last couple of weeks we have been looking at sorting in different ways, deciding our own criteria, looking at groups and deciding which group has more and fewer objects and sometimes recognising when the groups have the same. 

W/B 16.9.24 - PE (Sequencing Movement)

 

This term we are moving our bodies to a range of well known traditional rhymes such as The Wheels on the Bus and Polly Put the Kettle On. We are then using these movements in other dance styles such as ballet and rock and roll. We are getting better and better at remembering the sequence of movements and trying to move our bodies in different ways and at different tempos. 

Rossmere School Forest School - Extol Teams Day

 

Some of the Dragons visited Rossmere School to explore their Forest School as part of a whole academy trust event. They played various games such as  Capture the Flag, Tug of War and Splat. They also thoroughly enjoyed the fire pit cooking of marshmallows and jacket potatoes for lunch. They had the loveliest day! 

W/B 9.9.24 - PHSE (All About Me)

 

This week we have started our new unit of All About Me and we received a letter from Jigsaw Jenie - she shared with us that she will join our class shortly but in the meantime she shared with us her favourite toys. We looked at the toys Jenie likes and agreed that she likes the same sort of things as we do! We are going to get along well. We spent some time playing together with some of our favourite toys. 

 

W/B: 02/09/24 - Welcome Back! 

 

The dragons have settled back into Springwell life well - we took some time out on Friday for a bit of bonding fun in soft play.
