Welcome to Elephant Class!

 

 

Our teacher is Louise Charlton.

Our teaching assistants are Rachel, Abbie and Chloe.

 

Elephant class is a class of 10 children with a variety of learning difficulties, alongside associated speech, language and communication difficulties.

 

On our class page you will find information about what we are learning in class and the many exciting events that are coming up throughout the year. We will also use this page to share photographs and videos of your child's learning and any other special activities that occur within our class.

Hello Elephants!  Hope you are all ok.  The work on this class page is for the children that did not attend school last week.  The children that did return to school were given a printed homework pack.  

This week I would like you to recap on the 'Phase 3 digraphs' that we learnt in class and the 'Phase 2 and 3 tricky words.  I have attached some videos and would like you to play the following games on education city.

 

Year 1 - 'Garden adventure' - Identify the digraphs sh,ch,ng and th.

Hello Elephants! I hope you all had a fun half term holiday in the sunshine.  

 

On Friday the 5th June it is World Environment day so this week I would like you to help the environment by doing some recycling.

 

Can you name the different materials that you put in your recycle bin?  How many glass items do you recycle in one week?  Do you recycle more plastic than cardboard?  Can you help your parents/carers wash out the different containers ready for the recycle bin?

Why don't you make a model out of some of the materials e.g. a robot or animal.

 

Read through the powerpoint, listen to the 'Michael recycle' story and do the attached activities if you have access to a printer.

Hello Elephants! Hope you are all ok.  This week should have been 'Walk to School week' so I would like to you try and go for a walk every day.  Remember to cross the road safely! 

Why don't you look for some plants and flowers while you are out walking? I have attached a sheet below to help. 

If you cannot manage to walk outside, then you could always do the daily mile walk indoors.

On Friday 8th May it is VE Day when we celebrate the war ending 75 years ago.  

Why do we celebrate VE day?

Lots of people had street parties to celebrate the end of the war.  Why don't you have your own party in the garden?  You could make a picnic and listen to songs from 1945 and decorate your garden with union jack bunting or flags.  You could even try making a traditional dish form 1945.

On Wednesday 29th April it is 'International Dance Day' so I would like you to give these two dance routines a try and you might be able to make up your own routine or add some of your own moves.

I would like you to practice the 'Phase 3' sounds we had been learning in letters and sounds.  Watch the following video clips to remind you of the sounds and actions.

Practise writing the sounds out and see how many words you can think of that have that sound. e.g. How many words can you think of that have the 'ee' sound in them (beep, sheep, feel, peel, deep)?

You could ask your Parents or Carers to write all the sounds out and hide them around the house or in the garden for you to find.  

You can play some of the phase 3 games on education city (letters and sounds year one) and you could give the game below a try on phonics bloom.  If you are struggling with the phase 3 games then you can play the phase 2 games instead.

Hello to all my little elephants!  I hope you have all had a lovely Easter and got lots of eggs from the Easter bunny.  

This week to keep active, I would like you to give this fitness workout a try.  I had lots of fun doing it and I'm sure your parents, carers or brothers and sisters will join in with you.

This week in Maths I would like you to learn about 2D shapes. 

Can you name all of the shapes in the video below?  How many sides and corners have the shapes got?  Are the sides straight or curved?  Which shape has the most sides?

Why don't you go on a shape hunt around your house or in your garden to see how many shapes you can find? What shape is your front door/oven/washing machine door/mirror?

 

Can you make some of the shapes from different materials? eg lolly sticks, straws, string etc.

 

Test your knowledge of shapes by playing a shape game on education city.  

Have a go at doing a shape pattern by playing 'Shape Patterns' on www.topmarks.co.uk or sort the shapes by playing 'Shape Monsters'.

Hi.  I hope you are all are well and are keeping active. 

This weeks activities are all on the theme of rainbows.  I am sure many of you will have seen all of the lovely rainbow pictures on people's windows and this week I would like you to make one, if you haven't done so already.  You can use paint, crayons, felt tips or tissue paper. 

Please can you take a photo of you rainbow and send it to postcards@springwellschool.co.uk 

I can't wait to see them!

 

 

 

Your next task is to learn the 'I can sing a rainbow' song with all the Makaton signs.  See if you can learn it off by heart and teach someone in your family.

This term we have been learning about Dinosaurs and this week we should have been reading 'Dear Dinosaur'.  Why don't you listen to the story and write a letter to a dinosaur just like Max did.  Your child could practice writing sentences, put the initial sounds on some of the words or overwrite your writing.

Friday 13th March 2020: Hartlepool Museum - We went on a trip to Hartlepool Museum to look and learn about toys from the Victiorian times. They are very different to toys we have today.

Monday 9th March 2020: Sharing - In PSHE today, we have been learning all about sharing and taking turns. We played with different toys, sharing with each other and taking turns.

Monday 9th March 2020: Chocolate Brownies - We loved making Chocolate Brownies in DT today. They were so tasty!

Thursday 5th March 2020: World Book Day - We enjoyed celebrating World Book Day in Elephant Class. Here are some of our favourite books.

Thursday 5th March 2020: Ginger Snaps - In DT, we enjoyed measuring out the ingredients and mixed them together to make Ginger Snaps.

Monday 2nd March 2020: Subtraction Bingo - In Maths, We have been using number lines to help us answer subtracton sums during a game of Subtration Bingo.

Monday 24th February 2020: Shortbread - In Design and Technology, we worked in groups to make some tasty shortbread.

Friday 14th February 2020: Valentines Cakes - We really enjoyed making and decorating cakes for Valentine's Day.

Friday 14th February 2020: Materials - In Science, we have been discussing what things are made from. We found lots of materials in the classroom.

Thursday 13th February 2020: Addition Bingo - In Maths, some children played addition bingo, using a number line to help work out the answers.

Tuesday 11th February 2020: Safer Internet Day - We made wonderful posters for Safer Internet Day!

Wednesday 12th February 2020: Dinosaurs In The Supermarket - After reading the story 'Dinosaurs In The Supermarket' we went to Tesco to act out the story.

Monday 10th February 2020: Clay Dinosaurs - In Design and Technology this week, we made some dinosaurs using clay.

Friday 7th February 2020: Teessaurus Park - This term, after learning about a number of dinosaurs. We visited Teessaurus Park in Middlesborough to see the gigantic dinosaur sculptures.

Monday 3rd February 2020: Recycled Dinosaurs - In Design and Technology we used recycled materials to make some amazing dinosaurs.

Friday 31st January 2020: Dinosaurs Love Underpants - In Literacy today, we have been reading the story 'Dinosaurs Love Underpants'. We enjoyed deorating some underpants for out new display in class.

Monday 27th January 2020: Hindu Weddings - In R.E today, we have been learning all about Hindu Weddings. We had a lovely time making lots of decorations and getting henna tattoos (with face paint).

Friday 24th January 2020: Arcades - After learning about money in Maths this week, Elephant Class went on a trip to the arcades to look at which machines needed which coins. We even had a go of the machines.

Thursday 23rd January 2020: Spoon Sculptures - In Art today, we have been making some fantastic sculptures using plastic spoons and elastic bands.

Friday 17th January 2020: Sports Domes - Today, Elephant Class went on a trip to Seaton Sports Domes for a sports event with other primary schools from Hartlepool.

Thursday 16th January 2020: Sensory Numbers - In Maths today, some children enjoyed forming numbers in different sensory materials.

Wednesday 15th January 2020: Christian Wedding - In R.E., we have been learning about weddings. We had our very own christian wedding in class!

Monday 13th January 2020: Triceratops - We are learning all about different Dinosaurs in Elephant Class. After learning about the Triceratops, some children practised their cutting skills and made a cone puppet.

Friday 10th January 2020: Materials at Ward Jackson Park - In Science, we have been learning about different materials. We went on a trip to Ward Jackson Park to see what different materials we could see.

Friday 10th January 2020: Cups Per Litre - In Maths, we experimented and used a litre jug filled with water. We had to estimate how many cups we thought were in a litre. We then measured when the cup was half-full.

Wednesday 8th January 2020: Bread Hand Sculptures - In Art, we enjoyed learning about the artist Marc Quinn. He made sculptures from unusual materials. We then made some hand sculptures using bread dough.

Thursday 19th December 2019: Santa Visit - Santa came to visit us at Springwell School. He was very kind and brought us some lovely presents!

Tuesday 17th December 2019: Tweddle Farm - Elephant Class went to Tweddle Farm to visit Santa in his grotto!

Monday 16th December 2019: Mouse Control - In ICT, we were practising using a mouse on a computer, by moving the cursor around the screen and clicking once.

Friday 13th December 2019: Christmas With The Aliens - Elephant Class really enjoyed being Aliens in our school Christmas play!

Wednesday 11th December 2019: Thermometers - In PSHE, we used thermometers to measure out temperatures before and after exercise.

Thursday 5th December 2019: Cinderella Crowns - Some children made some very colourful and glamorous crowns for Cinderella to wear.

Thursday 5th December 2019: Acting Out Cinderella - We really enjoyed acting out the story of Cinderella today!

Wednesday 4th December 2019: Time Board Game - In Maths, we have been learning about time to the o'clock. Some children played a time board game.

Wednesday 4th December 2019: Cinderella Bingo - In Literacy, we used play-doh to make complete some Cinderella themed pictures and them played a Cinderella picture matching bingo.

Monday 2nd December 2019: Snowman Cards - We also made some fantastic Snowman Christmas cards this morning!

Monday 25th November 2019: Heavy and Light - In Maths, we used scales to measure objects. Predicting if they are heavier or lighter than other things.

Friday 22nd November 2019: Seaton - We went to Seaton Carew to look for what features a seaside town has. We found a beach, shops a park and lots of other things.

Thursday 21st November 2019: Cakes - We made some fantastic cakes for Red Riding Hood's Granny!

Monday 18th November 2019: Indian Houses - In DT we were learning about different houses and what materials they are made from. We made some Indian Clay Houses.

Friday 15th November 2019 - Anti-Bullying Week: Today we did lots of activities for anti-bullying week. We talked about what to do if you feel you're being bullied.

Thursday 14th November 2019 - Subtraction Bingo: In Maths, some children played subtraction bingo. Using sweets to help work out the sums.

Thursday 14th November 2019 - Responsibilities: In PSHE, we have been learning about and acting out different responsibilities we may have in school or at home.

Wednesday 13th November 2019 - Red Riding Hood Puppets: The children in Elephant Class enjoyed making some Red Riding Hood puppets.

Wednesday 13th November 2019 - Makaton: We had lots of fun learning the makaton signs to go with the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Friday 8th November 2019 - Number lines: We used number lines in maths today, to help us with our addition sums.

Thursday 7th November 2019 - Addition: In Maths, we have been learning about addition. We played various games involving adding two numbers together.

Tuesday 5th November 2019 - Button Fireworks: Using their fine motor skills, some children made fantastic button firework pictures.

Monday 4th November 2019 - Ukuleles: We had a brilliant Music lesson. We enjoyed learning about the different parts of a ukulele and we began to learn how to play them.

Monday 4th November 2019 - Firework Pictures: After learning all about Bonfire Night, we made some amazing Firework pictures using chalk and black card.

Thursday 24th October 2019 - Halloween: Elephant Class had a lovely afternoon during our fantastic Halloween Party.

Monday 21st October 2019 - Diwali Flowers: In R.E. we have been learning about the Hindu festival, Diwali. We made some flower decorations!

Friday 18th October 2019 - Acting Out Rapunzel: Elephant Class had the best time acting our the story of Rapunzel!

Thursday 17th October 2019 - Hartlepool Headland: We went to Hartlepool Headland to look at what we could find at the seaside. We found things such as a lighthouse, a pier and rockpools.

Thursday 17th October 2019 - Rapunzel Towers: In Art, we enjoyed making our very own Rapunzel Towers. They look fantastic!

Wednesday 16th October 2019 - Measuring Using Metre Sticks: In Maths, we have been using metre sticks to measure different rooms in school.

Wednesday 16th October 2019 - Rapunzel Makaton: We had a great time learning lots of Makaton signs to go with the story of Rapunzel.

Tuesday 15th October 2019 - Mile A Day: We enjoy doing lots of exercise in Elephant Class. We take part in a mile a day to keep fit and healthy.

Monday 14th October 2019 - Paper Clip Measurements: In Maths, some children used non-standard units to measure different items.

Thursday 10th October 2019 - World Mental Health Day: We had fun dancing and signing to the song 'Just The Way You Are' by Bruno Mars.

Thursday 10th October 2019 - World Mental Health Day: Elephant Class talked about their emotions and how it is important to be kind to others.

Thursday 10th October 2019 - Acting Out Jack and the Beanstalk: Elephant Class really enjoyed acting out this story!

Wednesday 9th October 2019 - Measuring Length: In Maths, we used some non-standard units to measure objects. We used paper clips and cubes.

Wednesday 9th October 2019 - Makaton Signing: We learnt some of the signs that go with the story, Jack and the Beanstalk.

Tuesday 8th October 2019 - Jack and the Beanstalk: Some children enjoyed playing a Jack and the Beanstalk board game!

Friday 4th October 2019 - Imagination Village: We had a fantastic time at Imagination Village. Exploring and playing in all the different role-play areas.

Thursday 3rd October 2019 - Pig Pin Pippetss: In Literacy today, we made some Pig Pin Puppets. They look amazing!

Thursday 3rd October 2019 - 3D Shapes: In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about 3D shapes. Some children played shape bingo and others made 3D shapes by cutting out a net of the shape and joining it together.

Wednesday 2nd October 2019 - Three Little Pigs: Some children used play-doh to make different objects from this week's story.

Wednesday 2nd October 2019 - 3D Shapes: In Maths, we enjoyed learning about and exploring different 3D shapes.

Tuesday 1st October 2019 - The Three Little Pigs: We had a great Literacy lesson today. We acted out the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Monday 30th September 2019 - Patterns: in Maths, we have been learning about patterns. Some children threaded beads to make different patterns.

Monday 30th September 2019 - Autumn Paintings: In Art, we worked hard making some fantastic autumn leaf paintings. Using real leaves to print with.

Friday 27th September 2019 - Tweddle Farm: We enjoyed a trip to Tweddle Farm to see the pigs. They were a bit bigger than the pigs from this weeks story!

Thursday 26th September 2019 - Shapes: In Maths today we have been learning more about 2D shapes. Some children made some fantastic pictures using different 2D shapes.

Wednesday 25th September 2019 - Pig Cakes: We made some amazing Pig Cakes in Literacy today.

Wednesday 25th September 2019 - Shape Hunt: In Maths, we have been learning about 2D shapes. Some children went on a shape hunt around school and found lots of different 2D shapes.

Tuesday 24th September 2019 - Three Little Pigs Song: In Literacy, we have been reading a new story, 'The Three Little Pigs'. Some children had fun learning a song to go with this story and then performed it for the rest of the class.

Monday 23rd September 2019 - Apple Crumble - After learning about Harvest Festival in RE, we made an extremely tasty Apple Crumble.

Friday 20th September 2019 - Souvenir Shop: We love playing in our Role Play Area during Golden Time.

Friday 20th September 2019 - Summerhill: We had lots of fun visiting Summerhill Park this morning!

Thursday 19th September 2019 - PAT Dog: Maisie the PAT Dog came to visit us today!

Thursday 19th September 2019 - One More and One Less: In Maths, some children went to to computer room to play a one more/one less game on Education City.

Thursday 19th September 2019 - Jackson Pollock: In Art, we had lots of fun making our own Jackson Pollock style paintings.

Wednesday 18th September 2019 - Hansel & Gretel Song: Some children in Elephant Class had fun learning a song that went with this week's story. They performed it for the class.

Wednesday 18th September 2019 - Fire Engine: We had a visit from some Fire Fighters and we got to sit in the Fire Engine. It was great fun!

Friday 13th September 2019 - Ward Jackson Park: We went on a trip to Ward Jackson Park to follow the trail that Hansel & Gretel found.

Thursday 12th September 2019 - Making Gingerbread Houses: In DT, we made and decorated some gingerbread houses. Just like the one from the story 'Hansel & Gretel'.

Thursday 12th September 2019 - Playtime: We love playtime in Elephant Class. We especially like the bicycles!

Thursday 5th September 2019 - Elephant Biscuits: We enjoyed making and decorating Elephant Biscuits in DT.

Thursday 5th September 2019 - Primary Colours: In Art, we have been learning all about the primary colours. We even had a go at mixing secondary colours.
